Tiberias. Synagogue at the Grave of Rabbi Meir Ba’al Nes.

Over time, the grave on this site, located on the Kinneret just south of Tiberias, seen here from the northeast, has been associated with a number of Jewish figures who, in turn, have been associated with a number of alternative grave sites. Since the sixteenth century, the (fictitious) association with the second-century scholar Rabbi Meir Ba’al Ha-Nes—which first seems to have been documented in the early thirteenth century—has been dominant. He was a fourth-generation Tanna, i.e., is assumed to have been one of the rabbis involved in the compilation of the Mishnah and the noncanonical Baraitot. Construction of the premises seen here began in 1867.
