Temple Emanu-El

Temple Emanu-El. (5th Ave.) N.Y. City

Construction of the old Temple Emanu-El at Fifth Avenue and 43rd Street began in 1866. Designed predominantly in the neo-Moorish style by Prague-born Jewish architect Leopold Eidlitz (1823–1908) and his Prussian-born (also Jewish) colleague Henry Fernbach (1829–1883), the synagogue was described by the New York Times as “the latest architectural sensation of this city” when it was inaugurated in 1868. Hall, Labagh & Co. installed a substantial organ with four manuals and 63 stops. The synagogue was demolished in 1927, after the congregation merged with that of Temple Beth-El, moving to the current Temple Emanu-El at Fifth Avenue and 65th Street.
