The postcard shows Merkaz Ba’alei Melakha (the “craftsmen’s quarter”), located between Allenby Street and Rothschild Boulevard, at an early stage of its development, presumably in the late 1920s or early 1930s. As the name indicates, the neighbourhood was initially established to provide both commercial and residential accommodation for artisans and craftsmen and their families. Most of the one and two-storey buildings that originally predominated have since been replaced by more imposing edifices or have had floors added. The corner in the foreground is likely located at what is now the confluence of Allenby, King George and Sheinkin Street, looking southeastwards towards what was then still the eastern edge of the city.
