Going to the Hakafot
This card shows elementary school teachers guiding their charges on the way to the festive procession with the Torah scrolls that takes place on Simhat Torah, the festival that celebrates God’s giving the Torah to the Jews. Each boy carries a flagpole, decorated with an apple and candle on top. The flags are adorned with lions, crowns and/or the Star of David. According to the National Library of Israel, this illustration was in circulation from 1888.
